Bijli Mahadev Trek

This is an easy trek to Bijli Mahadev, the temple of lord Shiva near Kullu. The temple has a 20 meter high iron rod on the top which is reputedly struck by lightning (Bijli) every year, shattering the stone phallus (lingam) inside. The priest puts the lingam together each time with butter and sattu, until the next lightning strike breaks it apart again. The twin valleys of Beas and Parvati can be seen from the campsite at Bijli Mahadev.

  • Day 01 Manali to Jana 4 hrs : The starting point of the trek is the old capital of Kullu – Naggar is just 21 km from Manali. To reach the village Nashala you need to take a natural road that leads through beautiful deodar forests. Then walk gradually for about 4 to 5 hrs and reach the camp of the day at Jana.
  • Day 02 Jana to Matikochar 5 hrs : A well built road leads to Matikochar where one can get lovely views of the Kullu valley and the surroundings snow clad peaks. The lights in the Kullu Valley can be seen during the night from the camp and provide a spectacular sight.
  • Day 03 Matikochar to Bijli Mahadev 4 hrs : Walk gradually through the Kais wild life sanctuary towards Bijli Mahadev, the temple of lord Shiva. It lies on a steep hill and has a 20 meters high iron rod on the top which was reputedly struck by lightning (Bijli), shattering the stone phallus (lingam) inside. The priest puts the lingam together each time with butter and a grain mixture until the next lighting strike breaks it apart again. The twin valleys of Beas and Parvati can be seen from the campsite at Bijli Mahadev.
  • Day 04 Bijli Mahadev to Pini Village 4 hrs : The next day’s steep descent takes you from Bijli Mahadev to Pini village along the beautiful Parvati valley.
  • Day 05 Pini Village to Jari 3-4 hrs : Enjoy an easy and relaxing trek through lovely apple orchards. Cross the bridge across Parvati river to reach Jari.
  • Day 06 Jari to Bhunter/ Manali 2 hrs/ 3.5 hrs : Waiting jeeps at Jari take you to Bhunter/ Manali for your onward journey home.
  • Accommodation during Trek (Camping) on sharing basis.
