Malana is an ancient village in the north-east of the Kullu valley. Guided by the spirit of the village God Jamlu, Malana stands out as an autonomous, self sufficient unit where inhabitants claim Greek ancestry. It is situated on a remote plateau by the side of the torrential Malana river and follows its own lifestyle and social structure. It has been the subject of various documentaries including, ‘Malana: Globalization of a Himalayan Village’, and ‘Malana, A Lost Identity’.
- Day 01 Manali – Naggar – Rumsu – Ghoni Karadi 5-6 hrs : Drive from Manali to Naggar along the left bank of the Beas River. at Nagger visit the Nicolas Roe rich ( Russian) art gallery and Nagger Castle. Start the trek towards Rumsu, a gentle climb through apple orchards. Trek onwards for another hour to Ghoni Karadi, a lovely site for camping.
- Day 02 Ghoni Karadi to Chaklani 4-5 hrs : Trek from Ghoni Karadi to Chaklani, a small village on the lower reaches of Chandrakhani Pass. Overnight in tents.
- Day 03 Chaklani to Chandrakhani Pass (3660 m / 12078 ft) to Nagruni 5-6 hrs : Trek from Chaklani to Nagruni via Chandrakhani pass. Overnight in tents.
- Day 04 Nagruni to Malana 3-4 hrs : The next day’s trek takes you to Malana village, a small cluster of around two hundred stone roof houses. Guided by the spirit of the village God Jamlu, Malana stands out as an autonomous, self sufficient unit where inhabitants claim Greek ancestry. Overnight in tents.
- Day 05 Malana to Jari to Bhunter/ Manali 4/5.5 hrs : From Malana, trail descends to the valley floor from where a fairly level walk leads through beautiful forests to the new dam on the Malana River. Another stretch of trekking starting from the dam takes you to Jari, just above the confluence of the Malana and Parvati rivers. Waiting jeeps take you to Bhunter/ Manali. Overnight in hotel.
